Candle Cost Calculator: What Each Candle Costs You And What To Charge

Wax, wicks, fragrance, jars and labels add up fast. See what each candle costs you and a price that covers it with profit left over.

Quick AnswerA candle’s price has to cover wax, fragrance, wick, jar, label, your time and a little overhead, plus profit. Divide your cost per candle by 0.6 to get a 40% margin. In our example, one 8 oz candle costs $9.35 to make and sells for $16.

๐Ÿ“ How To Use The Candle Cost Calculator

  1. Add what one batch costs. Wax, fragrance oil, wicks, wick stickers, jars or tins, lids and labels.
  2. Enter how many candles it makes.
  3. Enter how long it takes. Melting, mixing, pouring, wicking, trimming and labeling.
  4. Read your cost per candle and a price that leaves profit, and check the wholesale price too.

๐Ÿงฎ What One Candle Really Costs

Add the materials, your time and a little overhead, then add profit:

Price = cost per candle รท (1 โˆ’ the profit margin you want). For a 40% margin, divide by 0.6.

Example: one 8 oz jar candle (a batch of 6)

Cost Amount
Wax $1.60
Fragrance oil $0.85
Jar $1.40
Wick and wick sticker $0.35
Label $0.30
Lid and box $0.60
Materials per candle $5.10
Your time (1.5 hours at $15 for 6 candles) $3.75 per candle
Overhead $0.50
Total cost per candle $9.35
Price at a 40% margin ($9.35 รท 0.6) $15.58
Rounded to a friendly price $16

These are example numbers, not prices you must charge. Your costs and your hourly rate will be different.

โš–๏ธ The Wholesale Trap

Shops often buy at about half the retail price. At $16 retail, wholesale would be $8, which is less than the $9.35 each candle costs you. You would lose $1.35 on every candle. To wholesale and still make money, your cost has to be well under half your retail price. In this example even a $20 retail price ($10 wholesale) barely clears $9.35. That is why many small candle makers sell mostly direct, at markets and online, and lower their costs by buying wax and jars in bulk before they pitch to shops.

๐Ÿ’ธ Costs People Forget

  • Test candles and mistakes. Wet spots, sinking and weak scent happen. Add a few percent to cover the ones you cannot sell.
  • Fragrance oil. It is usually the most expensive ingredient by weight, and how much you use depends on your wax maker’s recommended fragrance load (often somewhere around 6 to 10 percent).
  • Labels and warning stickers.
  • Shipping supplies. Boxes, padding and tape for every online order.
  • Marketplace and card fees. The Etsy Fee Calculator shows what a sale really nets you.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Safety, Labels And Cure Time

Let candles cure for as long as your wax maker recommends (often a week or two for soy wax) before you sell them, so the scent is full. Candles also need proper warning labels. Look up the candle fire-safety labeling standard (ASTM F2058) and your selling platform’s rules, and ask an insurance agent whether product liability coverage makes sense for you.

๐Ÿช Selling At Markets And Online

Candles sell best when the label, scent name and story are clear in one look. Use the Craft Fair Profit Calculator to see whether a booth will pay off, and read how to price homemade products to sell from home for the bigger picture.

โ“ Questions People Ask

How Much Does It Cost To Make A Candle?

Add up the materials (wax, fragrance, wick, jar, lid and label), your time and a little overhead. The example above comes to $9.35 per candle, with $5.10 of that in materials. Yours depends on your jar, wax and fragrance.

How Much Should I Charge For Homemade Candles?

Work out your cost per candle, then add profit by dividing by 1 minus your margin (divide by 0.6 for 40%). Look at similar candles near you, but price from your own costs.

What Profit Margin Should Candle Makers Aim For?

Many makers aim for 40% or more, because of test pours, shipping and fees. Start there and adjust.

Is Selling Candles Worth It?

It can be, if you count your time and avoid the wholesale trap above. Candles are easy to make and crowded to sell, so a clear scent, label and story help you stand out.

Do I Need A License Or Insurance To Sell Candles?

The rules vary by state and city, and some marketplaces ask for candle safety labels. Check your local rules and ask an insurance agent about product liability coverage.
