Cupcakes take frosting, liners, boxes and time. Put in your numbers and see what each cupcake really costs and what to charge for one or a dozen.
๐ How To Use The Cupcake Pricing Calculator
- Add what one dozen costs. Flour, sugar, butter, eggs, the frosting ingredients, plus liners and boxes.
- Enter how many it makes.
- Enter how long it takes. Baking, cooling, frosting, boxing and cleanup.
- Read the price per cupcake and per dozen, then round it.
๐งฎ How Cupcake Pricing Works
Add up your ingredients, packaging, time and a little overhead, divide by the number of cupcakes, then add profit:
Price = cost per cupcake รท (1 โ the profit margin you want). For a 30% margin, divide by 0.7.
Example: one dozen cupcakes
| Cost | Amount |
|---|---|
| Ingredients (cake and frosting) | $6.60 |
| Packaging (12 liners and a box) | $2.40 |
| Your time (1.5 hours at $15 an hour) | $22.50 |
| Overhead | $1.50 |
| Total for the dozen | $33.00 |
| Cost per cupcake | $2.75 |
| Price at a 30% margin ($33.00 รท 0.7) | $47.14 a dozen (about $3.93 each) |
| Rounded to a friendly price | $4 each, or $48 a dozen |
These are example numbers, not prices you must charge. Your costs and your hourly rate will be different.
๐ Plain, Piped And Custom Cupcakes
Decorating changes the price more than the batter does. If piped roses and sprinkles add one more hour to the same dozen (another $15), the cost becomes $48.00 and the same 30% margin gives $68.57 a dozen, about $5.71 each. Charge more for custom flavors, themed toppers and rush orders.
๐ซ Cupcake Pricing Mistakes
- Leaving out the frosting. Butter, powdered sugar and food coloring add up.
- Forgetting the box. Cupcakes need a box that holds them upright.
- Not counting frosting time. It is often longer than the baking.
- Not charging for delivery. Cupcakes travel badly, so delivery takes time and care.
- Pricing to match a grocery store. Yours are handmade in small batches.
๐ก Ways To Sell More
- Sell by the half dozen and dozen with a small discount for the larger box.
- Set a minimum order, such as 6.
- Sell add-ons, like toppers and gift boxes.
- Take a deposit on big orders.
